The Music of Surfing
Surfing is one of the most popular water sports in the world. It is so influential that it has spawned its own unique culture. One of its most well-known developments is surf music, which is a distinct genre that has two major forms; namely, instrumental surf rock and vocal surf pop. This type of music had its glory days between the years 1961 and 1965, with Dick Dale and the Del-Tones along with the Beach Boys as two of its most well-known performing acts.
Surf music had its beginnings in the early years of the 1960s as a kind of instrumental dance music. Its sound was characterised by electric guitars which made extensive use of the spring reverb found in Fender amplifiers, which was thought to be similar to the sounds made by waves. The surf music craze was launched in 1961 with the success of Dick Dale’s “Let’s Go Trippin’”, followed up by the tune “Misirlou” in 1962. Most of the bands who rode the wave of this trend were formed in Southern California, and Orange Country was particularly noted for having a very visible surf culture.
However, surf music attained its biggest commercial success in its vocal music form. At the forefront of this movement was the Beach Boys. Their early albums combined instrumental surf rock with rock and roll, doo wop, and close harmonies. Their song called “Surfin’”, released in 1962, helped to make surf music a national phenomenon. Though the popularity of the genre declined when the British musical invasion happened in 1964, the style later experienced a revival during the 1990s.
